Life has returned to the surface of planet Eco following a catastrophic inter-planetary invasion. The Northern Lands are now split by the Great Rift, a Garden of Eden amidst the barren Outlands. Human life has also returned and learned to live with nature, refusing to return to the old ways. And human life is different now, possessing magical powers and steeped in wisdom; living with nature, not fighting it. Technology is frowned upon, because they will not go back to the dark days of their ancestors.
All of this is about to change when the shaman’s rebellious daughter Caia Esvane, detects a point of light travelling across the sky. The object is an escape pod and contains a dying man. Squadron Leader John Mack remains in stasis, a survivor of the great war that followed planetary invasion many thousands of years in the past. He isn’t the only survivor – a huge survival city known as City 5 remains on the seabed.
When Caia awakens him, the dying man sees the truth – the world has survived the war and has become a Garden of Eden. The escape pod returns him to City 5, where Lawkeeper Lucas Venn discovers the pod. John Mack’s last words to Lucas are that the surface is safe and it’s beautiful, a Garden of Eden.
As a reward, Lucas is the first to visit the surface, where he encounters Caia Esvane. They are destined to fall in love and hold the key to a future unity. As the news that the surface is safe spreads through City 5, the dystopian society within the city falls apart. Emergence devastates both societies, but as the conflict develops, an ancient and far more dangerous threat arises.
The peoples of the Rift and the surrounding Outlands must unite to face the new threat. After much debate, they choose Caia Esvane to lead the fight as her powers grow ever stronger. To make matters more difficult, she has encountered Lawkeeper Lucas Venn – sent to the surface to collect data – and knows they will be together. To realise her full powers and bring back the wyverns banished by her misguided father, Caia must pass a series of tests and question her beliefs, and there are those who want to see her fail. Ultimately, to save her own world, she must summon the planet itself.
